Trail description
The trail begins at the Grand Étang parking lot, located at an altitude of 427 meters and identifiable by its GPS coordinates: 16°01'40.6"N 61°37'41.7"W. From the very first steps, you’ll be immersed in a dense tropical forest teeming with rich flora and fauna, including tree ferns, giant bamboos, and wild orchids. In under 10 minutes, you’ll reach the shores of Grand Étang—the largest natural lake in the Lesser Antilles—offering a peaceful and captivating view.
The first main section consists of following the southern edge of Grand Étang for about 2 km. This segment, which takes around 45 minutes, climbs gently with a positive elevation gain of 150 meters. The trail can be muddy and crossed by tree roots, but the views of the lake and surrounding woods make the effort well worth it. Along the way, you might spot herons or other birds typical of wetland areas.
The ascent to Étang de l’As de Pique is the most challenging part of the hike. This 1.5 km section requires about 1 hour and 10 minutes to climb the 220-meter elevation gain, leading to the pond at 750 meters above sea level. This remote and majestic site is a true reward for determined hikers. Its peaceful atmosphere makes it a perfect spot to rest before heading back.
The return to the fork is via the same trail, followed by a technical 1.8 km descent with a 200-meter drop in elevation, taking around 40 minutes. Caution is essential here, as the terrain can become slippery in wet weather. The final portion of the hike, a 2.2 km path along the northern side of Grand Étang, offers a gentle descent and open views of the surrounding mountains, closing the loop in about 35 minutes.
